History and Tradition
The Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda has a proud history that dates to the early
part of the 20th Century. The organization has weathered the 1906 San
Francisco Earthquake, two world wars, the great depression, the turbulent 60's
and all the days in between.
Our Ideals and Ritual are timeless.
Through the years we have had many great men join our brotherhood. A fine
history of men, events, and traditions has emerged. We hope this page will give
you some insight into the world of Alpha Kappa Lambda. We hope in the future
to provide much more information from our archives, members, and chapters.

National History
Seven years later in 1914, at the suggestion of the President of the University of
California, they turned Los Amigos into a national fraternity of one chapter.
On April 22, 1914, a formation banquet was held in the Hotel Shattuck in
Berkeley, with members of the new Fraternity and many guests from the
community of the University of California in attendance. Alpha Kappa Lambda
became the first Fraternity to be founded on the West Coast, indeed west of the
Rocky Mountains.
We shared a desire to start a new style of fraternity. We "builders" sought to we
shared a desire to start a new style of fraternity. We "builders" sought to construct
a fraternity whose foundation was secure by scholarship, service to the
community, and a firm adherence to a non-hazing environment. While nearly
every fraternity claims to be non-hazing, we wanted to show through our actions
that such a fraternity was not just a possibility, but a reality. This was possible at
first for a number of reasons. We were all on equal terms, being founding
fathers, and did not look for someone else to do the work. The enthusiasm and
drive that existed can never be properly explained, especially on paper, but each
man felt it his duty and obligation to contribute all that he could to help the
fraternity grow. We rushed guys who wanted to play a part in shaping a new
fraternity, not just numbers to fill rooms. People rushed our fraternity because of
the men in it, not because of a name or a house. We experienced tremendous
success our first few years because everyone helped contribute to a common
goal: building a fraternity.
When we join AKL we become part of a special and unique group, but this does
not mean that we should compromise our individuality. Each member must get
involved if he is to help not only the chapter grow, but himself as well. Each
member must be a leader an use their vision to drive Alpha Kappa Lambda
ahead. Great leaders, however, are not cast from a common mold. Rather they
find in themselves those qualities an attributes which they can harness to
change the lives of those around them. Each member of this fraternity is capable
of making a lasting contribution to the chapter if he will just get involved.
We, as a chapter, have achieved a number of accomplishments, but we should
never let our success effect our attitude, shorten our desire, or lessen our
resolve. Challenges have been put before us and we have met then and will
continue to respond with the same enthusiasm and sacrifice as new obstacles
arise. I've learned we cannot expect success and respect for this fraternity, we
have to make it happen. All we do should be focused on creating a better and
lasting future for this chapter as well as preserving a memorable an respected
past.
